There are many reasons, you might want to use Dropbox for a single purpose and being able to name the folder simply “College Work” would make a lot more sense. Or it could simply be that you hate having the “My” prefix before everything (like me) and you want to name it something a little less annoying like “Dropbox” for instance. Whatever the reason, here’s a simple way to do it that will take two minutes (no messing with SQL databases and encoding the new folder in Base64
.
Download Dropbox Version 0.6.384
And the latest version of Dropbox
I have a fresh Windows 7 install with the latest version of Dropbox installed and the “My Dropbox” folder is in My Documents:
The latest version of Dropbox does not allow the user to specify the name of the folder because the average user won’t understand what they’re doing and possibly break something (according to the Dropbok devs), the old version of Dropbox, however allows you to move the folder and name it whatever you want.
So, first close down the currently installed Dropbox and let’s run the old installer!
Once installed the Dropbox icon will appear in the tray again, this time with the old version.
Right-click on the system tray icon and click Preferences, this will bring up the following dialog:
Click on the Move button and pick the name and location of the new folder, e.g.:
Press OK and wait for Dropbox to move the contents of your Dropbox folder to the new location.
Once the Dropbox icon gets that nice little green tick exit dropbox and run the latest installer.
This will replace the old version but keep the old settings.
And there you have it, a simple work around, thank you for reading.
